A two-hour hop from Manhattan, this soothing retreat in Connecticut has even the most uptight urbanites feeling relaxed and refreshed in a New York minute. Some come for the spa, others for the 58 acres of glorious gardens and woods, but it’s Jonathan Cartwright’s Muse restaurant that lures in the gourmets.

It’s indulgence on a quietly grand scale

Gourmet credentials – Modern, elegant and in pleasing contrast to the hotel’s trad New England air, Muse has caused quite a buzz since it opened its doors in early 2014. Younger sibling of the restaurant at Vanderbilt Grace in Rhode Island, Muse has been setting epicures a-chatter with its seasonal local fare (Connecticut Blue Point oysters,farm-reared Rohan duck, Maine lobsters and scallop mousseline…) and rewarding refined tastes with an extensive caviar menu. Under chef de cuisine,Sheffield-born Jonathan Cartwright, executive chef Stephen Barck presides over a menu that keeps one eye on the Mayflower’s spa guests – nothing too flabby or salted – but lets rip when it comes to dessert…

Top tipple – Drinks come courtesy of the Tap Room next door (which also serves a refined take on traditional tavern food). There’s a fair selection of local ales, in addition to the well-curated, award-winning wine list, which showcases a good by-the-glass selection.

 Highlights –

– A chic showcase of regional produce
